Career Changers Find A Future In Franchising

Key Takeaways

  • Franchising offers a structured path for career changers, regardless of background.
  • Franchisor training and support can help fill in the “experience gap.”
  • Reaching a traditional “top” career goal doesn’t always guarantee fulfillment.
  • A proven operational system reduces risk and uncertainty for new owners.
  • Franchise ownership often appeals to people seeking autonomy and unlimited upside.

The Framework Behind A Fresh Start

It’s never too late to change your mind about what you want to do with your career. That’s the story behind so many career changers who, even after decades in one field, find themselves drawn to something entirely different.

For many, that shift leads to franchising, where recognizable brand names, proven systems, and ongoing support remove much of the guesswork from business ownership. Whether they are coming from a career in education, corporate leadership, tech, or sales, franchising provides a structured way to step into business ownership without starting completely from scratch.

This month, as part of Thunderly’s “American Dreamers: The Stories of Franchising“© campaign, we’re spotlighting the career changers who took the leap after years in one industry to build a new chapter in another.

Jeff Toren spent nearly two decades in software sales before becoming a Kitchen Tune-Up franchise owner, while Noel Arriola left almost 30 years in information technology behind to open an Eggs Up Grill franchise. Their backgrounds couldn’t be more different, but both found their next chapter through franchising.

When Sales Wasn’t The Right Fit

Before becoming a Kitchen Tune-Up franchisee, Jeff spent his entire career in software sales, working his way up to a role he thought would be the pinnacle of his career – VP of Sales. But once he got there, it wasn’t what he expected.

“I had reached a position that I thought was my ultimate goal, and I actually hated it,” Jeff says.

That realization pushed him to look for something different, and he found it in franchising with Kitchen Tune-Up and Bath Tune-Up, serving territories near Philadelphia.

Coming from a sales background, Jeff had zero experience in kitchen remodeling, but the franchisor’s training filled that gap quickly.

“I didn’t know anything about kitchen remodeling when I got into this business,” he says, “and it really allowed me very quickly to get domain expertise so that I could be an expert.”

Looking back, Jeff has no doubts about the move.

“Owning a franchise has changed my life in a lot of ways,” he says, adding, “If I could go back and look at ‘would I do it all over again?’, I definitely would.”

These days, he can’t picture going back to a traditional job at all, admitting,

“The thought of having a, quote, job is something I’ve actually joked [about] recently with a lot of people,” he said. “I think I’m unemployable now. Being an entrepreneur is so empowering and so powerful. It’s my business. I can take it where I want. I can go in whatever direction I want. To me, the opportunity for unlimited growth and potential and income is what drives me.”

From Corporate Tech To Restaurant Ownership

Noel Arriola spent 28 years as a director of IT, overseeing 18 locations across Florida, before deciding he wanted something different.

He had no background in the foodservice industry, but Eggs Up Grill stood out from the moment he started looking. The brand was quick to respond, and the fit felt right from the start.

“They were really quick about it. They were friendly, authentic,” Noel says. “I just had that right feeling about Eggs Up Grill.”

That feeling has held up for Noel when he opened his first franchise in Winter Garden, Florida. He points to the brand’s investment in its franchisees as a key part of his success, as well as a proven system that makes running the business more straightforward.

“If you follow the structure that Eggs Up Grill has… the template is there,” he says. “If you follow that, it’s almost foolproof.”

Eggs Up Grill has built its brand around fresh, made-from-scratch food and a genuine focus on guests. Today it’s the fastest-growing better breakfast franchise in the country.

How Career Changers Are Redefining The American Dream

Jeff and Noel’s stories are just two examples that the American Dream isn’t reserved for one type of person or one point in a career.

Whether someone is stepping away from a corporate title or leaving a field they’ve worked in for decades, franchising offers a real path to business ownership, backed by systems, training, and support that help fill in the gaps a new industry can bring. Their journeys are part of a larger pattern we see across franchising, where people bring the skills and discipline built over a lifetime of work into something entirely their own.
